Purslane: A Natural Way to Control Diabetes
Diabetes is a prevalent condition wherein the concentration of glucose in the bloodstream is chronically higher than normal.
Diabetes is a prevalent condition wherein the concentration of glucose in the bloodstream is chronically higher than normal. As the sixth leading cause of death in America, diabetes is responsible for over 180,000 deaths each year. Diabetics are two to four times more likely than non-diabetics to die from stroke or heart disease. The ravages diabetes unleashes—blindness, kidney disease, nerve disease, amputation, and impotence—make this an especially cruel disease.
In diabetics, the antioxidant defenses become weakened. Studies show that LDL (bad cholesterol) is more prone to oxidation in diabetics and that their blood contains a high level of harmful products caused by the oxidation of fat. Perhaps most importantly, the complications of diabetes—from heart disease and stroke to diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and damage of the nerves—have all been linked in some way to the formation of free radicals.

Scientists now understand how diabetes causes rampant damage of arteries and veins. Hyperglycemia, the accumulation of glucose in the blood, sets an enzyme called protein Kinise C (PKC) into overdrive. In addition to giving signals to the genes and causing cells to grow and divide fast, PKC also starts a chain reaction that changes the elasticity of the veins and arteries. The consequently hardened arteries are very prone to breaking. Blockage of the tiny arteries feeding the eye and the subsequent bursting of these arteries can cause blindness. Bursting of the arteries in the brain can cause a stroke. In the kidneys, unhealthy arteries cause nephropathy. Blockage of larger arteries can cause heart disease or can starve tissues to death, a condition that may require amputation.
Medicinal Food and Plants Play a Role
Studies show omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are very important to diabetics, as they reduce oxidation of LDL, neutralize free radicals, and bridge the nutritional gaps often found among people with diabetes. One way of obtaining these required nutrients is to harness the power of nature and nourish the body with medicinal plants.
Purslane, an herbaceous annual with fleshy succulent leaves, poses one of the richest sources of fatty acids ever encountered in a green leafy plant. This unassuming “garden weed” is chalk full of nutrients that can help manage diabetes. The main components in the purslane are tocopherals (alpha gamma and delta), known to be strong antioxidants. Purslane also contains vitamins C, A, E, as well as a whole gamut of minerals, including phosphorus, zinc, calcium, magnesium, manganese, silicon and phosphorus.

Antioxidants, such as glutathion and vitamins E, C and A, are important for diabetics because they prevent the inflammatory enzyme PKC from going into overdrive. Antioxidants also provide the following benefits to diabetics:
- They prevent the inflammatory enzyme PKC fram going into overdrive and causing damage to the blood vessels.
- They reduce the oxidation of LDL (a major problem for diabetics).
- They prevent platelets from becoming sticky and from piling on to cause plaque.
- They prevent life-threatening blood clots.
Through proper diet and food supplementation, type 2 diabetics can reduce their insulin needs significantly. Time and time again, studies have demonstrated that for type 2 diabetics, purslane reduces the amount of insulin needed. If you or someone you love suffers from diabetes, consider arming yourself for the fight with a natural remedy. Remember that a diabetic’s diet is very important, and no diabetic should stop his or her insulin without consulting their family physician.
